Information
Brentwood,
TN, Website
Brentwood has a population of 23,825. Brentwood was incorporated in 1969 though
the first settlers actually came to Brentwood in the late 18th century. The
land was granted to Revolutionary War Soldiers, by the Veterans of War Association
of the State of North Carolina.
When Brentwood was first founded the original place to go in the area was
at the Frost Place. The Frost Place was located on Old Smyrna road and had
a general store and post office. The grist mill, which provided jobs for the
settlers was located at the Frost Place as well. However, with the advent of
the railroad and paved roads (highways) the town center moved to revolve around
these busier areas, as it was easier to transport goods from a central location
to the railway and roads.
Brentwood was a growing flourishing community by the time of the Civil War.
At the beginning of the war, Brentwood was one of the richest cities in Tennessee.
The soil was fertile and the plantations were all doing very well. People could
afford lavish furnature and designs for the plantation homes that were built
on the plantations, and off the main streets of Brentwood. The huge plantation
mansions were used as hospitals or bases for soldiers, both Confederate and
Federal Armies staying in the city at different times. There was so much activity,
and so few men working as most of them had been called off to serve their country
during the war that by the end of it there were very few crops or farm animals
left, having all been used to feed the hungry men who moved through Brentwood
between battles.
With the capture of Nashville, and Union occupation in the region for a few
years during and after the war, the economy in the South dropped. Productivity
was down and Brentwood saw the results of this as the city fell into ruin.
Brentwood may have been down but it was not out. The area recovered from the
effects of war and by the roaring 20's it was rediscovered
Gradually many of the plantation homes were bought and restored. One such
home is The Cool Springs House. The Cool Springs House is a Victorian styled
mansion that is located in Brentwood. It now is rented out for weddings, tours
and conferences amongst other things.
With the construction of
the Interstate in the 1960’s, and Brentwood
being central to the area, Brentwood again grew and prospered. Today it is
again one of the richest areas in the state.
Brentwood is the home to several parks and and nature centers. Deerwood Arboretum
